Manheim Twp. vs. Avon Grove - PIAA class 3A preliminary round game

Manheim Twp.’s Brenna Campagna (2) takes a shot against Avon Grove during first-half action of a PIAA class 3A preliminary round game at Manheim Twp.’s Gene Kruis Field in Neffsville Tuesday Nov. 7, 2023.

The Pennsylvania High School Field Hockey Coaches Association announced its All-State teams last week, with 25 players from the Lancaster- Lebanon League receiving either the First Team, Second Team or Honor-able Mention accolades.

The All-State lists were broken down by school classifications.

First Team

Class 3A

Manheim Township’s run to its first PIAA Class 3A finals appearance probably never happens without the contributions of four First Team members. Senior midfielder Brenna Campagna scored 19 goals and had 17 assists for the Blue Streaks and will be going to Wake Forest next fall. It was her second consecutive First Team selection.

Junior midfielder Brooke Weaver had 15 goals and 25 assists.

Junior back Gracie Clawson had seven goals and one assist, but her biggest contribution was her defensive speed that helped Manheim Township shut out its first three state playoff opponents.

Of course, the other First Team member for the Blue Streaks, senior goalie Zoe Caloviras, had something to do with that as well. She had 14 shutouts and stopped 81% of the shots she faced.

Penn Manor, a state quarterfinalist, put three players on First Team: senior forward Avery Bradburn, senior midfielder Grace Gerner and senior midfielder Tristan Groff. This is Groff’s second-straight year on the First Team, and Gerner was an Honor-able Mention last year.

The Comets placed third in District Three and made it to the state quarterfinals.

Perhaps conspicuous by its absence, Warwick made the state semifinals but did not have any players on the PHSFHCA All-State Teams.

Class 2A

Junior midfielder Ella Brubaker and senior midfielder Kiley Hosler were both named to the first team for Manheim Central, which did not win any titles in 2023 but was runner-up in Section Two, a semifinalist in the L-L and District Three tournaments and a quarterfinalist in states. Hosler was a Section Team member last year, while Brubaker was an Honorable Mention.

Class 1A

Elco junior defender Kailen Hibshman was the only Class 1A player from the L-L to make either First or Second Team.

Second Team

Class 3A

The Blue Streaks did not depend on only their First Team all stars for their success. Manheim Township’s sophomore midfielder Rhylee Givens and freshman midfielder Julia Weaver were both Second Team selections.

Givens and Weaver scored the goals for the Blue Streaks in their 2-1 overtime victory over Lower Dauphin in the District Three Class 3A championship game, with Givens scoring the winner in overtime.

Class 2A

Ephrata reached the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinals with no First Team members. However, senior midfielder Joanna Ehrhart, sophomore midfielder Marie Mc-Cracken and senior goalie Hannah Popolis were all honored on the Second Team. Ehrhart and Popolis were Honorable Mention last season.

Likewise, Elizabethtown had a successful year with a Section Two championship and two players on the second team: senior forward Mikaela Condran and junior midfielder Piper Patrick. Manheim Central’s junior defender Libby Urban and senior defender Emmy Weaver were both named to the Second Team.

Honorable Mention

Class 3A

Cedar Crest’s improvement from three wins to seven was rewarded with a District Three playoff berth and two Falcons making the Honorable Mention list: senior defender Reese Arnold and senior forward Danielle Schroll.

Class 2A

Section 2 put a couple of players on the Honorable Mention list with Ephrata’s Alexis Kresge, a senior defender, and Garden Spot’s Emma Swatski, a senior midfielder.

Class 1A

Annville-Cleona shared the Section 4 title with Lancaster Country Day and beat the Cougars 8-0 in the first round of the District Three Class 1A playoffs. Senior forward Grace Francis scored a goal in each of the Dutchmen’s wins against LCD and was named to the Honorable Mention list.

Gianna Lambert, a junior forward from Octorara, was also placed on the Honorable Mention list.
