BASKETBALL

 Knights of Columbus Council 867 will be holding its annual Free Throw Contest on Jan. 7 at Sacred Heart School, 235 Nevin St., Lancaster. Registration is from noon to 1 p.m., and the contest is from 1-4 p.m. Age groups for girls and boys are 9-14. FLOORBALL

 The winter floorball season is scheduled to begin Jan. 14, and the Lancaster Floorball Club plans to have six floorball sessions at the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA, located at 800 Village Road, Lancaster. Kids will play from 3-4 p.m. and adults from 4-5:30 p.m. Floorball is an internationally popular, easy to learn, non-contact sport similar to ice hockey, street hockey and field hockey. The club will provide the equipment; players should wear shorts, a T-shirt and sneakers. Cost is $10 per session, or $15 per family. Prepay discount is $50 per person, $75 per family. FOOTBALL

 Manheim Township Youth Football will be electing a new president for its 2024 season. GOLF

 Online volunteer registration is now available for the 79th U.S. Women’s Open, which will be contested at Lancaster Country Club May 27-June 2, 2024. Approximately 1,600 volunteers are needed to fill positions on 13 committees, including marshals, merchandise and corporate hospitality. PICKLEBALL

 Pickleball is a fast-paced sport that is easier on the joints and quicker to learn than other racquet sports. If you’ve never played pickleball before, start out on the right foot with a beginner lesson from GEARS. Lessons cover everything you need to know to get started with the sport. This includes basic techniques, rules and strategies. All equipment is provided, and Brenda McBride will instruct. Ages 18 and up. Classes are held on Thursdays, from Feb. 22-March 7, from 6-7 p.m. (Intermediate) and 7-8 p.m. (Beginner) at the GEARS Community Center Gym, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. RUNNING

 The 19th annual “Run-4-Luck” four-mile road race will be held March 9, starting at 8 a.m. The start and finish will be in School Lane Hills at the Wilson Drive entrance to Baker Field. SCHEDULING

 GEARS will be holding the 2024 Elizabethtown Area Facility Scheduling Meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. This is a mandatory meeting for leagues, associations and groups interested in utilizing Elizabethtown Borough, West Donegal Township, Mount Joy Township and/or Elizabethtown Area School District athletic fields/facilities. Organizations should have a representative attend to review regulations, facility stipulations and to discuss facility requests. SQUASH

 Free squash court time is being offered at Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster. Racquets, balls and goggles are available to borrow, but indoor court sneakers with non-marking soles must be worn. Year-round times are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:15-7 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. No registration is necessary. TENNIS

 GEARS is offering Indoor Tennis Lessons this winter for youth ages 3-11. All classes will meet at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Iddy Biddy Tennis for ages 3-6 will teach children to play quickly using large-sized RED balls and smaller nets and courts. The ABC’s (agility, balance and coordination) will be developed. Class is Tuesdays Feb. 6-27, from 5:30-6 p.m. Beginner Tennis for ages 6-11 will teach children of any skill level the fundamentals of tennis using the ORANGE balls and smaller racquets, nets courts. Through the use of fun games and drills players will learn proper technique of forehand, backhand, serve and volley. Class times are 6-6:50 p.m. (ages 6-8) (A) and 7-7:50 p.m. (ages 9-11) (B).

TRACK AND FIELD

 The Track and Field and Cross Country officials of the Lancaster-Lebanon League have a pressing need for new officials. This is a great way to stay in touch with the sport as well as the outstanding young people who participate. Previous experience is not necessary, as training and mentoring may be provided. VOLLEYBALL

 GEARS is accepting teams for its Winter/Spring Coed Sixes Volleyball League, scheduled to begin Feb. 5 and conclude on April 15. Teams interested in playing should submit a team roster and registration fee no later than Jan. 22 to be included in the league schedule. Games will be on Mondays, between 6:30-10:30 p.m. at the GEARS Community Center. The league is a 10-match season with playoffs. Minimum 6-/maximum 15-player roster.
