BASKETBALL

 Knights of Columbus Council 867 will be holding its annual Free Throw Contest on Jan. 7 at Sacred Heart School, 235 Nevin St., Lancaster. Registration is from noon to 1 p.m., and the contest is from 1-4 p.m. Age groups for girls and boys are 9-14.  Develop new basketball skills over the holiday break. A Holiday Basketball Clinic will be led by the Elizabethtown High School boys basketball coaches and players from 10 a.m. to noon on Dec. 29. Shooting and 5-on-5 games will be played. Emphasis on dribbling, passing and footwork. Boys and girls in grades 3-6. Clinic is at Daubert Gym, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. FITNESS

 Strengthen, tone and condition your body from head to toe. Get ready for body weight exercises, plyometric drills and weight training to help mix up your normal routine. Working the major muscle groups of your upper and lower body during this total body workout will help build muscle strength, lean muscle mass and preserve bone density. Abdominal work will also help stabilize and strengthen your core muscle groups. Never the same class from week to week. Suitable for all ages and experience levels. FOOTBALL

GOLF

 Online volunteer registration is now available for the 79th U.S. Women’s Open, which will be contested at Lancaster Country Club May 27-June 2, 2024. Approximately 1,600 volunteers are needed to fill positions on 13 committees, including marshals, merchandise and corporate hospitality. PICKLEBALL

 Pickleball combines tennis, table tennis and badminton. It is a fast-paced sport that is easier on the joints and quicker to learn than other racquet sports. If you’ve never played pickleball before, start out on the right foot with one of our beginner lessons. Lessons cover everything you need to know to get started with the sport, including basic techniques, rules and strategies. All equipment is provided. Brenda McBride will instruct. RUNNING

SCHEDULING

 GEARS will be holding the 2024 Elizabethtown Area Facility Scheduling Meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. This is a mandatory meeting for leagues, associations and groups interested in utilizing Elizabethtown Borough, West Donegal Township, Mount Joy Township and/or Elizabethtown Area School District athletic fields/facilities. Organizations should have a representative attend to review regulations, facility stipulations and to discuss facility requests. SQUASH

 Free squash court time is being offered at Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster. Racquets, balls and goggles are available to borrow, but indoor court sneakers with non-marking soles must be worn. Year-round times are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:15-7 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. No registration is necessary. SWIMMING

 This children’s swimming program provides opportunities for achievement and allows smooth transition between levels of instruction for ages 4 and older. Activities offered at every level stimulate interest and motivate participants to advance to the next level of instruction. Classes are on Saturdays, Jan. 6-Feb. 24. Parent and child swimming is from 8-8:30 a.m. (ages 6-24 months) and 8:40-9:10 a.m. (ages 2-3). Tadpole (ages 4-5) is from 9:20-9:50; Guppy (ages 4-5) 10-10:30; Frog 10:40-11:10; Seahorse 11:20-11:50; Seal/Dolphin/Shark noon-12:30 p.m. Classes are at the Masonic Village Patton Pool, 1244 Bainbridge Road, Elizabethtown. TRACK AND FIELD

  The Track and Field and Cross Country officials of the Lancaster-Lebanon League have a pressing need for new officials. This is a great way to stay in touch with the sport as well as the outstanding young people who participate. Previous experience is not necessary, as training and mentoring may be provided. YOGA

 Breath-based flowing yoga sequences are used to warm the body, foster mobility and flexibility, balance, and create a deep sense of relaxation. Learn postures using safe alignment and modifications. Designed for all fitness levels and can be adapted to individual needs, abilities and desires. Bring a yoga mat and yoga block. Michelle Pelna, certified and registered yoga teacher, will instruct.  Multi-level class incorporates yoga poses, conscious breathing and a meditative focus to foster strength, flexibility and relaxation. Each class includes the following phases: checking in and warming up; building heat and awakening energy; focused strength, balance and breath work; deep stretching and a final relaxation. Various options will be provided for more or less intensity throughout the class so that it is tailored to individual participant needs. Participants should wear layers of comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat, strap and block. Taught by Charla Lorenzen, an experienced registered yoga teacher (RYT-200). No experience necessary.
