A restaurant featuring Belgian beer and food has opened in downtown Lancaster.

Bert & the Elephant debuted this week at 29 E. King St., taking first-floor retail space next to New Holland Coffee Co. in the building that’s the headquarters for Woodstream.

Bert & the Elephant is owned by Alberto Flores, who previously operated Bert’s Bottle Shop near Millersville, a restaurant that debuted in 2017 and then closed in February 2022.

Flores featured Belgian beer and food at his Millersville location, a specialty he has fully embraced with the opening of his Lancaster city restaurant. Bert & the Elephant offers about two dozen Belgian beers dispensed from each brewery’s specialty taps and served in glassware that are custom-made for each beer.

In addition to Belgian beers, Bert & the Elephant features about a half-dozen American craft beers as well as ginger beer, wine and cocktails on tap. The food menu includes twice-baked wings, flatbreads, smash burgers, steak frites and Belgian meatballs.

Bert & the Elephant has inside seating for around 65 as well as room for around 20 on a patio that will be open in warmer weather. In addition, a covered side patio along Lenox Lane next to the Lancaster County Courthouse can also be open in warmer weather, offering additional seating for around 80.

The restaurant’s name is an homage to Delirium, a Belgian brewery whose logo is a pink elephant.
