Wenger Scooter VF 1.jpg

An Amish scooter rests along the side of a barn on the first block of Union School Road in Oxford on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2023.

I found this Through the Viewfinder photo of an Amish scooter resting on the side of a barn when I was in Oxford last year to shoot a produce auction. I gained permission to take a photograph from the family after explaining who I was, and how this photo would be used.

I remember playing with a scooter very similar to this when I was a kid at my great-grandfather’s house. It was a fun trek when you are a youngster. As an adult, I’m thankful to have a lot more horsepower under my hood.

I appreciate the lines and the deep shadows in this image. Perhaps the Amish enjoy taking their time to get where they are going, but I enjoy going a bit faster to all points of interest. However, it still helps to be able to slow down enough so you can enjoy the view(finder).

THE METHOD: The image was shot with a Nikon D6 body and a 24-70 mm lens set at 27 mm. The ISO was set to 400, the shutter speed was 1/1600th of a second, and an f-stop of f-8 was employed.
I opened the photo in Photoshop then immediately opened Silver Efex Pro 2 by Nik Collection, from my filter options. I started with my favorite preset within the software called wet rocks. As I liked the look, the image was transferred back to Photoshop where I finished the photo by setting the crop and adding contrast.
